Have you ever felt like things are getting on top of you and you’re just stressed all the time? I have and I know it’s not nice. Being a sufferer of depression, I know how debilitating this illness can be and how important it is to be aware of the signs. Things were starting to get the better of me and I knew that if I didn’t take action now, I could soon find myself in a depressive state. To ensure this didn’t happen, I thought a lot about changes that I could make to my life that would have positive outcomes, essentially boosting my morale. One of the simplest things that I have found to help, is start the day the right way.
Sounds corny? Well that’s probably because it is (a little bit). Phrases like ‘getting out of the wrong side of bed‘ or ‘rise and shine sunshine‘ are frequently used throughout media and pop culture. But if you start the day the right way, this will have a positive flow-on effect for your mental and physical being.
Start the Day the Right Way
Maybe you’ve already got a great morning routine and you show up for work/life early, with a bright smile and positive attitude. But if you don’t there are a few simple changes you can make to help start the day the right way.
For me it’s about getting up, doing a fat burning walk (FBW a brisk walk on an empty stomach first thing in the morning) and eating a healthy, balanced breakfast. I always thought that I ate a fairly healthy breakfast, but I wasn’t balancing it nutritionally, so a few changes and I now have a great breakfast that I not only love to eat, but also provides me with the calories, carbs and protein I need to start my day. I don’t do my FBW every day but have a goal to complete a minimum of 30 minutes three times a week. For anyone trying to lose weight, this small change has really helped me boost my fat loss, and is a great low impact exercise. I’m also loving these walks for a moment of ‘time out’ where I get to enjoy watching the sunrise over the ocean (and take a multitude of photographs to capture it’s beauty). It’s such a magical thing to see at the beginning of the day.
Reader’s Digest wrote a great article on 24 Ways to Brighten Your Morning with tips like:
- Read a motivational quote (e.g. dreaming or doing is a choice that will mean the difference between failure or success)
- Take a vitamin (I always forget to take mine)
- Cuddle your kids (I love this one!)
- Wake up to the smell of coffee (I want to know who the hell is making this mythical coffee if I’m still in bed?)
- Kiss all the people you love in your house (awwww..)
That’s how I start the day the right way, and it’s had such a positive impact on my overall mental health, and surprisingly my weight loss achievements.
I’d love to hear your tips on how you start the day the right way. Do you have a special ritual or mental exercise to get you off to the best start for the day?
