We all know that we are supposed to include a moisturiser as part of our daily beauty routine, but do you know why it is so important? Using a moisturiser creates a barrier between your skin and the world, essentially trapping the moisture in. But is there any benefit to trapping moisture, other than the joy of being able to shout “I got one!”? Well, it just so happens that trapping moisture in your face will keep the skin smooth, hydrated and give it that ‘youthful appearance’. Think about it – have you ever gone a day without moisturising? Other than the ‘eew’ factor, your skin probably started to feel rough. That’s because it was drying up… So before you turn all craggy, slap some moisturiser on your face. Or, an even better option would be to make some of my jojoba and coconut moisturiser.
You’re probably thinking “so what, I didn’t moisturise. What’s the worst that can happen”? Just think of Lin Shaye as Magda in There’s Something About Mary. Not sure what I’m talking about? Check her out here.
Now we know for sure, moisturising is a must! But what is it that makes jojoba and coconut moisturiser so good?
Benefits of Jojoba & Coconut Moisturiser
JOJOBA – originally used by native Americans to treat skin wounds, the use of jojoba oil in skin care is now widespread. Jojoba is not only a great moisturiser but is also anti-inflammatory, antibacterial & great in the treatment of acne. Jojoba is great for oily/combination skin because after a few days it will settle that shiny T zone.
COCONUT OIL – slows the development of fine lines. Say no more really.
VITAMIN E OIL – blocks free radical damage (and therefore blocks wrinkles), boosts collagen production and contains antioxidants for intense healing. When taken orally, Vitamin E supports heart health & reduces the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol.
YLANG YLANG ESSENTIAL OIL – has a balancing and stimulating effect on skin.
GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL – an effective astringent used to heal scars and promote cell regeneration.
BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL – is antibiotic and disinfectant in nature inhibiting the growth of germs and fungi. Used in cosmetics for it’s healing properties and the reduction of scarring.
Jojoba & Coconut Moisturiser Ingredients
- 150 ml Unscented Jojoba Cream
- 45 ml Virgin Coconut Oil
- 5 ml Vitamin E Oil (puncture and drain two vitamin E capsules available at the supermarket/healthfood store)
- 4 drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
- 2 drops Geranium Essential Oil
- 1 drop Bergamot Essential Oil
Place all ingredients together in the blender and blitz until well combined. Store in a sterilised, air tight jar.
Don’t be alarmed if at first your skin looks a little shiny (use blotting paper if necessary). The shine will generally fade in about twenty minutes and after a few days of use, the skin will start to balance itself.
